Julie samples the delights of the Rickshaw

Bury’s BIG Breakfast presenter Julie MacLeod went out to see Bury’s Rickshaw, here’s how she got on.

So I went out on Bury’s Rickshaw yesterday. Invited by Libby Ranzetta who was our pilot, we collected my co-passenger Irene from her home in Bury and were treated to a fabulous trip around the town. Irene who is 90 years young was born in Bury and has lived here all her life. During the war, Irene was in the Observer Corps and based at the Guildhall, such a knowledgeable lady she was able to tell me lots of history about some the buildings and how the town was years ago. The Rickshaw has been purchased with money from locality budgets of Cllrs David Nettleton, Trevor Beckwith, Jo Rayner, John Augustine, Sarah Stamp and Julia Wakelam and it is also supported by many businesses in town like The Angel Hotel who allow the volunteers to park in their car park free of charge and Revel Outdoors who service the Rickshaw free of charge too. There are 30 volunteers who either pilot the electrically powered cycle or are “chatty chums” that escort passengers. If you would like to know more about their services or get involved with this wonderful organisation take a look at their website www.bserickshaw.org.uk. I can honestly say I haven’t enjoyed myself so much in a very long time.
