Cheltenham Festival Prize Money

Those of you who follow horse racing are most likely going to be tuning in to one of the most revered horse racing events that takes place in the United Kingdom, which is, of course, the Cheltenham Festival.

This iconic jump racing festival is made up of several Grade 1 races which includes the most popular event the Cheltenham Gold Cup along with the Champions Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Stayers’ Hurdle. With this highly competitive event only open to the best horses and jockeys across the country, you can be sure the stakes of winning are very lucrative, to say the least.

This iconic event takes place just once a year so you do not want to miss the incredible action that the Cheltenham Festival always dishes up for its viewers.

Over the four days of intense racing, there is over £4.1million up of for grabs, which each of the countries finest jockeys, horses, trainers and owners will be battling it out for. With a total cash prize greater than £4.1million, Cheltenham Festival falls just shy of the Grand National’s total cash prize. However, the reputation and racing honour that comes with winning an event at Cheltenham Festival is second to none and cannot be priced with money.

Out of the several races that take place during the Cheltenham Festival, the most desired is always the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which boasts that largest cash prize of all the other events. For the 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup, there was a total purse of £625,000 available with the winning horse taking just over £325,000. The Champion Hurdle follows in a close second when it comes to the cash prize, with a total purse of £450,000 available with the winning horse taking around £250,000. The Queen Mothers Champions Chase is one of the newer races to be added into the festival and has a purse of £400,000 with £225,000 taken by the winner. Finally, the Stayers’ Hurdle event has the smallest purse of £325,000, however, the winning horse will still earn just over £180,000. So now you can clearly see why this is regarded as one of the most prestigious horse racing events that takes place, with a huge amount of pride, honour and money up for grabs.
