Update – Abbey Garden birds found in a bag after being taken from their aviary

A number of birds from the Abbey Gardens aviary have been removed from their cages and left tied up in plastic bags.

Park keepers had originally reported the birds had been stolen at some point between 4.30pm yesterday (Thursday 12 December) and this morning (Friday 13 December) at 6.30am. The three Parakeets were later found tied up in a bag close by.

A spokesperson for West Suffolk Council, said: “We can confirm that it appears someone forced their way into the aviary at Abbey Gardens between 4pm and 6.30am. Staff at first believed three parakeets had been taken but found a bag with them in still in the aviary. The three birds were released from the bag into the aviary flight and we are pleased to say they do not appear to be any the worse for their experience. While no birds are missing this attempted theft is obviously concerning and we would urge anyone who has information to contact the Police. We are working with the Constabulary and this is now a criminal investigation.”

Anyone saw any suspicious activity, has any knowledge of the incident or the whereabouts of the birds stolen they should contact police quoting crime number 37/75060/19
